1960’s Sprite Camper
In the late fall of 2023 I found a free vintage camper listed online. It was filled with trash, completely gutted, and missing most of the passenger side wall. It seemed like the perfect project.
Once cleaned out, the design process began. As per usual this started with CAD models, furniture and cabinet schematics and a few concept drawings.
We hit a few snags along the way. The windows that came with the camper turned out to belong to another camper so they didn’t fit, and the axle, wheels, couplers and suspension were all designed in the 60’s in Europe so they all had to be replaced. It took some creative problem solving and a bit more budget than expected, but eventually began to take shape.
The final touches really helped make the space complete. Once we’d seamed and painted the walls and then installed the hardwood flooring, finishing touches like hardwood counter tops, shaker doors and a folding couch really brought everything together. Intending to use the space as a mobile store on occasion I fashioned the walls with French cleats so the shelves could be designed for specific uses or products.
The final step was hooking it up to my car and driving it from Maine to Montana. There are still plenty of changes and tweaks to be made, but its become a handy little home on wheels.
